Berkeley/Haas Charity Poker Tournament – Shanghai – Sunday April 14th

Dear Shanghai Haas & Berkeley Alumni,

The Haas Alumni Network-Shanghai Chapter is holding our very first Charity Poker Tournament on Sunday, April 14th near Xintiandi. All proceeds from entry fees will go to charity (details below).  First place winner of the tournament will be awarded a trophy and bragging rights among our peers until we hold the tournament again!  We welcome participation from all Berkeley alumni, not just Haas.  If you cannot attend but want to donate to the charity, please see contact details below.

The charity that we are fundraising for is our very own UC Berkeley!  The funds will be used for the Berkeley Booth at the first annual Shanghai Technology Trade Fair to be held in Shanghai from May 8-11.  This is the first time that UC Berkeley will participate in a large scale event in China to promote our brand beyond the academic community.  A Berkeley representative from the Central Licensing Office will be at the Berkeley Booth to communicate the technology IPs that are available for licensing and commercialization.  Berkeley Engineering will be in the booth to promote our substantial research capabilities.  An IP law professor from Berkeley Law will be speaking at the IP Day forums on May 10th.  (Did you know that Berkeley Law invented IP law 20+ years ago and is still ranked #1 in that field?!)  Through this event we hope to let more industry and business people in China learn about UC Berkeley!

About the Shanghai Technology Trade Fair (http://www.csitf.cn/)

While the Guangzhou Trade Fair has been going on for decades that feature trade in products, and the Beijing Trade Fair has been going on for 4 years that feature trade in services, 2013 will be the first year of the annual Shanghai Trade Fair that features trade in technology, signaling the Chinese economy’s new focus and direction.  UC Berkeley, being one of the premiere research universities in the world, has significant value to add to this conversation.  Berkeley’s participation in the Shanghai Tech Trade Fair rests on the support of us alumni, whether through personal donations or company sponsorships or volunteer staffing of the booth or just dropping by the booth to say “hello.”  So if you can lend your support in any of the above ways, please contact Ann Hsu (annhsu@alumni.haas.org).
